People In Music History
Vivaldi, Antonio (1678-1741) Italian violinist and composer; also priest,
nicknamed "the red priest" (il prete rosso) from the color of his hair. Pupil
of Legrenzi, Long in charge of music at an orphanage conservatory in Venice,
but died in obscure circumstances in Vienna. Wrote more than 450 concertos
(broadly conforming to the concerto grosso type) with various solo instruments,
many with illustrative titles, e.g., The Four Seasons; also operas, church
music, oratorios, including Juditha Triumphans. Bach admired him and
transcribed many of his works (e.g., Bach's concerto for 4 harpsichords and
strings is a transcription of Vivaldi's concerto for 4 violins and strings);
and there has been a notable revival of interest in his works in the mid-20th
century. His works have been variously catalogued and numbered, most recently
by Ryom, whose numbering is preceeded by RV, Ryom-Verzeichnis (Ger., index).
